Abstract:The loss properties of square-lattice micro-structured optical fibers were simulated numerically by the multipole method. The effects of the structural parameters, such as the air hole diameter of each layer and the number of the layers in the cladding, on its loss properties at 1.31 and 1.51 were studied. It is confirmed that the loss can be reduced dramatically by choosing high air-filling rate, and lower loss can be gotten by increasing the diameter of air holes of the outermost layer or the layer number of the cladding air hole with unchanged dispersion. The calculation and analysis provide a certain theoretical basis for the design of micro-structured optical fibers with desirable dispersion and low loss.
